Our Spot

I remember when we found our spot.
With the grass and plants and bugs and the stream.
The shade kept us cool in the late spring heat.
You told me you missed her and you were alone.
I told you I was always here for you.
you said nothing. I smiled anyway.

We went back to our spot every week.
The birds and reptiles frolicked in the grass
we ate our lunches and laughed and held hands.
I saw my reflection in the stream and held back tears.
I told you that dysphoria was killing me.
You said nothing. I smiled anyway.

We only went to our spot once that summer.
The days grew longer and so did our distance.
I barely touched my food.
You told me about this guy you met.
Said he was okay in bed and made you feel wanted.
I lied and said I was happy for you. I smiled anyway.

I watched the autumn leaves fall at our old spot.
It was cold and the life was going dormant.
I ate my lunch in silence and thought of you.
I thought about reaching out but didn’t.
You were a memory of days long gone.
I looked back at our old spot and smiled anyway.
